Transit Code (Canada): A nine-digit code used to identify a specific branch and institution for transactions within and outside of Canada. For electronic wire transfers in Canada, the routing number format typically includes a leading zero, followed by the institution number and the branch transit number.

The format is: 0YYYXXXXX

0: Starting with zero

YYY: Financial institution number (3 digits)

XXXXX: Transit number (5 digits)

For example, for the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), the format would be:

000312345

0: Starting with zero

003: Financial institution number for RBC

12345: Transit (branch) number
